A total number of 86 top engineering colleges in West Bengal have been rated as per the grades of AAAA, AAA+, AAA, AA+, AA, A+, A and A-  rated 3217 engineering colleges in India out of 3600 colleges which is considered to be the total number of engineering colleges in India.
Kharagpur and Durgapur are two cities that immediately comes to one’s mind whenever one looks at West Bengal. With its long intellectual tradition the state is home to fine institutions in almost all educational domains. Bengal Engineering College, of the oldest engineering colleges in the country is in the state. About 30% of the institutions have high quality students and the gap between the clusters in terms of cut-offs is minimal and uniform across the clusters. A recent change in legislation has led to a large number of private sector players entering the technical education domain, which can potentially bring in vast changes. None of the private players have breached the ‘AAA’ category, but many like Heritage Group and Techno India are on the way to becoming good quality institutions.
